Expansion and Renovation of the Emergency Department of CHUC
One of the three largest hospitals in Portugal.
The project included the construction of a new building for medium clinical complexity areas within the Emergency Department. The new hospital block, developed over three floors adjacent to the lateral wing, also integrates a connection to the cardiothoracic unit through an elevated walkway.
The project also included the execution of two external technical areas to accommodate the new ventilation equipment for the expansion zone, as well as the existing equipment that had to be relocated.
Ten hygienic-type air handling units, suitable for hospital environments, and 56 fan coil units were installed to ensure the air conditioning of the different spaces. Ventilation and smoke extraction were provided by approximately 14 fans, with air and water distribution carried out through more than 4,500 m² of ducts and 5 km of piping.
This intervention enabled the reorganization of the interior of the department in line with the functional zoning defined by the hospital, while respecting the existing structure and ensuring the complete refurbishment of the infrastructures.
